Speaking of classic World War II movies ... what are your favorites?

Started by Website editor. Last reply by KK Brees Feb 18, 2011. 11 Replies

Okay, I know I'm going to be controversial and disappoint some of my Marine friends here on our site, but I thought that 'The Pacific' was a little disappointing. 'Band of Brothers' has become the defacto standard from HBO, Tom Hanks and Steven…Continue

What are you reading now?

This is a great time of year to pick out a new WWII history book and read it cover-to-cover. I read Memoirs of the Second World War by Winston Churchill a couple of months ago for a research paper. I highly recommend it. It won the Nobel Prize in…Continue

WWII Home Front books

Started by Tamara Goff. Last reply by Jackie (Owens) Williams Dec 1, 2010. 1 Reply

Jackie had asked what were good books on WWII Home Front, and since that's my FAVORITE thing to read about, I had to chime in!"Don't You Know There's a War On?" by Richard Lingeman is, in my opinion, the hands down best book. It's long, very…Continue

Lisa, that book looks amazing - Kriegsprache. A bit pricey, though, but since it's self-published, that's to be expected (having worked in self-publishing for 2 1/2 years!).

True, HH is back even now ! - I have to stick with my favorite group of grunts though ... I loved Combat as a little kid in the 60s.

(Many WWII vets were quoted as saying that the show was very well done and accurate.)

Well, that settles it. I better do some DVD shopping!

I promise - you will love Combat! - it is the '60s version of Band of Brothers in GLORIOUS black and white.

Furthermore, Combat featured many many future stars on some episodes. ("one-shot" only) Everyone from Lee Marvin to Shecky Greene.

Just finished reading, "Four Came Home" by Carroll V. Glines. This is the story of the 8 Doolittle Raiders that were captured by the Japanese. They were all tortured, and four were murdered. Three by direct execution and one by refusal of medical treatment.

The inspiring thing in the book is how the other four survived. There was no training at that time for what they went through. As a matter of fact, their experiences were later used to train our troops how to deal with being captured. Great reading about the OSS parachuting in to prisoner camps to help our troops, and that saved the life of one of the Raiders who was almost dead.

I highly recommend it. I bought mine used on Amazon for about $8 plus shipping.

I had the recent privilege of learning World War II history first-hand from Mr. and Mrs. H. Paul Bailey, through in-person interviews. Paul was a U.S. Marine from 1943 to 1946, who fought in the same division, 1st Marine Division (3/7), on Okinawa as Eugene Sledge (3/5), author of With the Old Breed and subject of HBO’s ‘The Pacific’.  Full story »
